Arusha and the surrounding area

Arusha, the gateway to the world
famous Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara is one of the oldest cities in Tanzania.
Arusha has become the tourist capital of Tanzania, with a population of about 400,000 people. Located at 1.540 meters above sea-level, Arusha has a very pleasant climate throughout the whole year. Positioned in the middle of Africa, Arusha is the administrative headquarters of the East African Community of Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. 

Arusha offers you an excellent opportunity to purchase beautiful authentic souvenirs. Tanzanite, the local gemstone of Arusha and one of the finest gems from Africa, sold in all jewelry-shops in the city, alongside other locally mined stones such as ruby and tourmaline. Tanzanite was first discovered in 1967, about 40 kilometers to the southeast of Arusha at Mererani. Until today, Mererani remains the only commercially viable source of Tanzanite in the world. Tanzanite is named after Tanzania.

Arusha National Park

This is one of the smaller National Parks but varied with spectacular landscapes and a rich variety of wildlife. The park is 137km² and is divided into 3 parts, Mount Meru, Ngurdoto Crater, and Momella Lakes. It is possible to visit this park throughout the year, with spectacular landscapes and a large animal population, ideal for a day trip. You can do a walking-safari here, walk to the high gorges and the waterfalls in the north and enjoy a tropical rainforest on Mount Meru, experience the flora and fauna at the Momella lakes with a rich flamingo population. Explore the beautiful Ngurdoto Crater because of its incredible beauty and wealth of wildlife, all this with the incredible Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru in the background. It is also possible to go on a canoeing safari on Momella Lake and approach the animals without disturbing them. Of course, it is also possible, to do a game-drive in an “open” vehicle.
